The Parkinson's Action Network (PAN) today is saddened by the death of Rep. John Murtha (D-PA).  Rep. Murtha, who was first elected to Congress in 1974, was the Chairman of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.  This subcommittee has jurisdiction over the Department of Defense, including the Neurotoxin Exposure Treatment Parkinson's Research (NETPR) program, the only Parkinson's-specific program funded by the Federal government.  The NETPR program continues to carry forward promising research that will help both members of our military and the Parkinson's community.

Rep. Murtha's support of the NETPR program ensured that millions of dollars went to cutting-edge Parkinson's disease research.  The loss of Rep. Murtha is a loss for the entire Parkinson's disease community.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.
