Congressional Committee Launches 21st Century Cures Initiative
PAN is closely following the progress of a new initiative by the House Energy and Commerce Committee called 21st Century Cures.
The mission of the initiative is for Congress to take a comprehensive look at what steps Members can take to accelerate the pace of cures in America through medical innovation. The Energy and Commerce Committee is taking the lead on looking at the medical innovation process “from the discovery of clues in basic science, to streamlining the drug and device development process, to unleashing the power of digital medicine and social media at the treatment delivery phase.”
The Energy and Commerce Committee has held several hearings, a roundtable, and released several white papers soliciting ideas and information on how to improve and modernize how we develop treatments and cures. The most recent white paper is focused on seeking input from the patient community and PAN plans to submit comments to the Committee before the June 13 deadline. PAN has met with the Committee on this initiative and will continue to engage with the Committee as it embarks on this important and unique initiative.
Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI), chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, and Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) also released a video explaining the initiative. Watch below.
