The Parkinson’s Action Network (PAN) celebrates Senate introduction of a bill to create Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Parkinson’s disease registries. The bill, S. 1273, will create, for the first time, separate, permanent, and coordinated MS and Parkinson’s disease national registries at the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Today is the last day to comment on the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) draft stem cell guidelines. PAN encourages all advocates to express their support for human embryonic stem cell research that provides hope to millions of Americans, including the Parkinson’s disease community. Comments will be accepted on the NIH webpage until 11:00 p.m. on May 26, 2009.

Today, the Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research (CAMR), of
which PAN is a founding member, sent a letter urging President Obama to
issue a straightforward Executive Order that reverses President Bush’s
policy on embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) and calls on the National
Institutes of Health to issue appropriate ethical guidelines. While we
have no information causing us to believe that the commitment to
reverse the restrictive Bush policy will not be kept, the delay in
action from President Obama is beginning to cause us concern.

E-mail your Senators now in support of funding for the National
Institutes of Health (NIH) in the American Recovery Reinvestment Act of
2009. Currently, the Senate is considering their version of the bill and it
is expected that Senator Arlen Specter will offer an amendment to
increase NIH funding from $3.5 billion to $10 billion during Senate
floor consideration.

Today, the House Democratic leadership introduced the American Recovery
and Reinvestment Bill of 2009, an $825 billion economic stimulus
package that will be soon be considered by Congress. The stimulus provides $1.5 billion for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for expanding jobs in biomedical research to study diseases such as
Parkinson’s disease. As this bill is considered by Congress, the
Parkinson’s community will work with Members of Congress to ensure
support for NIH remains in the final legislation. |
