On February 11-13, 2007, the Parkinson's Action Network (PAN) will host the 2007 Research and Education & Public Policy Forum, the Louis Fishman Advocacy Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C., and a Congressional Reception on Capitol Hill. 
 
CAMR Looks Forward To Working With 110TH Congress

The following statement was made by Sean Tipton, president of the Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research (CAMR) [PAN is a member organization of CAMR]:

"Members of CAMR met today to discuss plans for stem cell legislation to be considered in the 110th Congress.  We all agree that 2006 has been a memorable yet ultimately disappointing year in this battle for better treatments and cures.

The Parkinson's Action Network (PAN) mourns the loss of Robert Kupperman after his long struggle with Parkinson's disease.  He died Friday, November 24 at the age of 71.

On Saturday, November 11, 2006, the Parkinson's Action Network (PAN) held its first-ever Midwest Regional Conference on Parkinson's disease, with the support of Schwarz Pharma.
 
Election Wrap Up

Tuesday's election determined who will represent you when the new 110th Congress convenes in January of 2007.  Leading up to the election, campaign news was dominated by the war in Iraq, immigration, economic and values issues.  But in the last few weeks, Parkinson's disease and stem cell research, thanks to the work of so many advocates, played a prominent role in the political debates.  So now it is time to think about what the election and the new 110th Congress means for the issues important to the Parkinson's community.

In the past few days, Parkinson’s disease and stem cell research have been discussed in the media and throughout the country at a level we have rarely seen. Although we at PAN do not involve ourselves in campaigns and candidates, we do involve ourselves with the one million Americans living with Parkinson’s disease. We stand with Michael J. Fox and the entire Parkinson’s community and are pleased that there has been so much awareness brought to the disease.

Udall Dinner Awards Great Success

On September 26, 2006, the Parkinson's Action Network hosted its 13th Annual Udall Awards Dinner.  The dinner was a night of honoring PAN's advocates and the entire Parkinson's community for their hard work and support this past year in the mission to find better treatments and a cure for Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's Community Lauds Senate Passage of Stem Cell Research

The Parkinson’s Action Network (PAN) on Tuesday applauded the overwhelming bipartisan passage of H.R. 810, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, by a vote of 63-37. PAN now turns to President Bush and implores him to sign the legislation into law.

Last week a senior White House aide suggested President Bush will likely veto legislation expanding federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. It would be unusually tragic if this became the president's first veto.

 
APTA Urges Congress to Extend Medicare Therapy Cap Extension

In a letter to Congress today, more than 40 organizations representing patients, health care providers, and advocates joined the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) in urging members of Congress to extend the Medicare therapy cap exception process beyond 2006.

 
FDA Approves Exelon as the First Medication Indicated to Treat Parkinson’s Disease Dementia

Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Exelon (rivastigmine tartrate) for the treatment of mild to moderate Parkinson’s disease dementia, making Exelon the first medication available for the treatment of this condition.
 
Sarizotan Phase III Studies Did Not Meet Primary Efficacy Endpoint

Merck KGaA announced today the completion of two Phase III clinical trials of Sarizotan in advanced Parkinson’s disease patients suffering from dyskinesia.
