Senator Arlen Specter (D-PA) Remembered Fondly

The Parkinson’s Action Network (PAN) mourns the loss of former Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter, and is thankful for his longstanding dedication to biomedical research funding.  A Senate champion for NIH, Specter was instrumental in doubling the National Institutes of Health (NIH) budget between FY 1998 – 2003.

PAN CEO Amy Comstock Rick said, “Senator Specter had a deep knowledge of the research process, and how much funding and time it took to make discoveries and advance science.  He was instrumental in the creation and funding of the Cures Acceleration Network at the NIH, and understood how critical translational research is in bringing therapies to market more quickly and efficiently.”

Specter was a champion of science who recognized the life-saving potential of human embryonic stem cell research, and supported researchers and clinicians across the country as they worked toward better treatments and cures for diseases and disorders.

“Anyone who has ever worked or met with Senator Specter can tell you he was a no-nonsense leader whose direct approach to his work was a breath of fresh air,” Rick added.  “He will be missed.”
