In a new poll  by Research!America and the American Society of Hematology, Americans predict China will surpass the U.S. in science and innovation by 2020, that elected officials are not paying enough attention to combating diseases, and that the federal government is currently not spending enough on medical research.
Americans also did not have faith that a budget agreement would be met and 65% of respondents predicted that another government shutdown would happen in the coming months. That prediction was shared across party lines with 66% of Democrats, 65% of Republicans, and 65% of independents believing a shutdown was likely. The majority of respondents also found that the shutdown in October caused “significant harm to many government-funded programs including medical research, defense and education.”
