Workplace Giving Programs Benefit PAN
Every year, billions of dollars are donated to non-profits across America through workplace giving programs. Employees appreciate these programs, because it allows them to donate pre-tax dollars to organizations they support and makes them feel good about where they work. Employers not only enjoy the tax benefit of matching their employees’ contributions, they also help create a stronger sense of workplace loyalty by doing so. And, non-profits benefit from increased donations when employers match an employee’s donation.
Thousands of businesses across America have a workplace giving program in place, and the Parkinson’s Action Network (PAN) appreciates the opportunity to be included – not just for the additional resources but also because it allows us to educate people about Parkinson’s disease and the work we do.
For example, last month ExxonMobil invited PAN to participate in the kickoff of its 2011 Employees’ Favorite Charity Campaign, a year-long matching donation program commencing every fall. Through December of this year, employees are able to make a pledge to charities they support. These gifts are then deducted from their paychecks in 2012 and ExxonMobil matches their donation dollar-for-dollar.
As part of its program launch, ExxonMobil hosted a fair at their headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia, where non-profit organizations to which their employees have previously donated were invited to host a display table and speak to employees about the work they do.
PAN’s Director of Development/Individual Giving, Craig Evans, expressed PAN’s thanks for ExxonMobil’s campaign saying, “PAN is extremely grateful to be included in a great cause, and we appreciate the support that we receive from ExxonMobil and its employees.”
ExxonMobil raised a record $2.8 million for Washington, D.C. metropolitan area non-profit organizations during its 2010 Employees’ Favorite Charity Campaign. The company has raised a total of $19 million since they started this program in 2002.
If you currently support or would like to support PAN, ask your employer if they have a donation-matching program. If your employer does not match charitable contributions, ask your human resources staff how to get a matching-gift program started. It is a great way to leverage your giving for a cause that you care about!
