On June 2, 2009, Congressman André Carson (D-IN) introduced H.R. 2648, which would authorize the President to award a Gold Medal on behalf of Congress to Muhammad Ali in recognition of his contributions to the Nation.  Muhammad and Lonnie Ali are tireless advocates for the Parkinson’s community and the Parkinson’s Action Network (PAN) supports this legislation for their never-ending work.

The legislation recognizes the significant contributions Muhammad Ali and his family have made to the Parkinson’s community.  As founding directors of the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center (MAPC) in Phoenix, Arizona, Muhammad and Lonnie Ali have committed their time, resources, and leadership to the Center and helped to raise more than $50 million for Parkinson’s disease research.   The Center’s mission is to provide excellence in treatment, research, and education for patients and families affected by Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders regardless of ability to pay.

Muhammad Ali is a beacon for all who continue to fight for better treatments and a cure for Parkinson’s disease.  For Muhammad and Lonnie Ali’s work with the MAPC and the tenacity of spirit the Ali family shares with the Parkinson’s community, PAN supports this legislation.

PAN is working with Congressman and the entire Bicameral Congressional Caucus on Parkinson’s Disease to secure passage of H.R. 2648 in the 111th Congress.
