The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the world’s largest funder of biomedical research. Its mission is science in pursuit of fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to extend healthy life and reduce the burdens of illness and disability. Composed of 27 Institutes and Centers, NIH funds research grants in all fifty states and around the world in order to find medical discoveries that improve people’s health, understand disease, and save lives. On April 2, 2013, President Obama announced a new research initiative, the Brain Research through Advancing Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative. The Initiative aims to revolutionize our understanding of the human brain by bringing together the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and the National Science Foundation (NSF) as well as key private sector partners, like the Allen Institute for Brain Research.
