John J. Zakarian has agreed to become state co-coordinator for Connecticut, along with PAN veteran Bob Mandelkern. John replaces Barry Williams, who resigned. John recently retired as editorial page editor and vice president of The Hartford Courant, Connecticut's largest daily newspaper. He has been a journalist all his professional life, having worked as a writer and editor in Chicago, Boston and St. Louis before moving to Connnecticut 30 years ago.
PAN's coordinators Bob and John made PAN-related presentations at three Parkinson's support meetings in the state in recent months. John talked about his experiences at the PAN annual forum in Washington and introduced the organization to attendees. Bob focused on stem cell research, particularly in our state. We distributed PAN badges and literature and urged sign ups for action alerts. We will continue spreading the word at support group meetings throughout the state.
We are happy to report that Connecticut's entire congressional delegation, both senators and House members, have signed on to PAN's entire agenda on Capitol Hill. We have found no pushback from any member of the delegation on any of the items on the PAN list. A few congressional staff members informed us that their reps had not signed off on some of the items in the past because they were not aware of them. For example, not everyone knew about the Parkinson's congressional caucus. After our explanations, they told us they found no reason to say no.

JUNE 18:

State coordinator Bob Mandelkern will be at the Yale University Stem Cell Center on June 18 for a symposium on "Stem Cells: Everything You wanted know but were afraid to ask." Bob will be one of two speakers. He will share the podium with Dr Haifan Lin, director of the Yale Stem Cell Center and professor of cell biology and genetics at Yale school of medicine.

The meeting is scheduled to start at noon at the TAC auditorium on campus. For more information, please contact the host of the meeting, Kristin Dugan, 203 785 6239.

JUNE 13:

Connecticut APDA's next lecture is on "Understand the Non-Motor/Behavioral Changes in PD" to be presented by Dr Joseph H. Friedman of NeuroHealth and Brown University School of Medicine. He is the author of the book, "Making the Connecticut Between Brain and Behavior: Coping with Parkinson's Disease." The luncheon meeting will be at the Holiday Inn in Norwich, Ct. on June 13, 11:30--2 p.m. For more information, please call 1 877 282 7328 or www.ctapda.org

JUNE 10:

The Parkinson's support group in West Hartford will meet on June 10 at the town's senior center at 3:30 pm. Steve Holleran, who has had deep brain stimulation, will speak about the surgery.
