Statement by Amy L. Comstock, Executive Director of the Parkinson’s Action Network Regarding the Hwang/Schatten Cloning Paper Published in Science magazine, June 2005.
December 16, 2005 (WASHINGTON, DC) – “Along with the Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research (CAMR), we support an investigation into these serious allegations and support the scientific community urging the authors to cooperate with them in conducting independent tests of the cell lines.? “We still firmly believe that the field of embryonic stem cell research and therapeutic cloning holds promise for the more than one million people with Parkinson’s disease and their families.? “This apparent setback serves an illustration that this important field of research should be conducted in the U.S. under the strict supervision of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and its stringent peer-review system.? The Parkinson’s Action Network (PAN) is the leading advocacy voice of the Parkinson’s community—more than one million Americans and their families. Through education and interaction with the Parkinson’s community, scientists, lawmakers, opinion leaders, and the public, PAN leads the fight to ease the burden and find a cure. PAN increases awareness about Parkinson’s disease and seeks federal support for Parkinson’s research.
