The Parkinson’s Action Network (PAN) today lauded the Bush Administration’s move to increase its FY 2009 Food and Drug Administration (FDA) budget request by $275 million. This increase in FDA funding is a legislative priority for PAN, and this rare amendment to the Administration’s budget recognizes that such increased resources are key to getting safe, effective drugs in the hands of patients faster.
Last month, FDA Commissioner, Andrew von Eschenbach, sent Congress a request that an immediate infusion of $275 million in funding for FDA be included in the emergency supplemental funding bill being considered in the House and Senate. PAN strongly supported the efforts of Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI) and other key Senators to include this much-needed finding in the Senate supplemental bill. PAN advocates have been contacting the House of Representatives asking that this funding increase be included in their version of the supplemental bill.
“We are encouraged that FDA Commissioner von Eschenbach recognizes the need for increased funding at FDA,” said PAN CEO Amy Comstock Rick. “We continue working with our allies in Congress to fully fund the FDA to help get safe, effective treatments in the hands of people with Parkinson’s and other diseases. The Parkinson’s community is pleased that Dr. von Eschenbach has joined in the fight to provide the FDA with the resources it needs to quickly and safely produce potentially life-saving drugs.” |
