You can help secure additional funding for the National Institutes of
Health (NIH) again this week! Senators Tom Harkin and Arlen Specter
introduced S. 3272, the NIH Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act
of 2008, to provide the NIH with an additional $5.2 billion of research
funding for Fiscal Year (FY) 2008. Thanks to your efforts, we were
successful in securing $150 million for NIH in the FY 2008 Emergency
Supplemental Appropriations Act signed into law on June 30, 2008. We
now have the opportunity to secure additional NIH funding in another
supplemental appropriations effort!
The $5.2 billion of research funding provided in the NIH Emergency
Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2008 seeks to restore the NIH’s
purchasing power after five consecutive years of flat funding that has
not kept pace with biomedical inflation. Without appropriate funding,
NIH does not have the resources to engage in the clinical and
translational research needed to hasten better treatments and cures for
Parkinson’s disease and many others. The NIH Emergency Supplemental
Appropriations Act of 2008 will reestablish NIH funding at levels
consistent with inflation and provide NIH with the resources to support
scientists working toward better treatments and cures for diseases.
Urge your Members of Congress to support NIH funding by clicking “Take
Action” and asking them to support S. 3272, the NIH Emergency
Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2008. E-mail today! The Senate may
act on this issue this week!
